Fire Razed The Popular Mile One Market In Port Harcourt Today

The popular Mile One Market in Mile One Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was razed by fire in the early hours of this morning Tuesday 17^th December, 2013, following a surprise fire outbreak.

Some of the eyewitnesses said the fire may have started around 1 a.m. or 2 a.m.

By 3:40 a.m., the rampaging fire had mercilessly gutted a large portion of the market.

Some firefighters from the Rivers State Fire Service were present as at press time. The fire seems to have surpassed their skill and equipment as it started with multiple explosions, gradually and steadily kept moving to other parts of the market and buildings along the Ikwerre road. 

Hundreds of traders, sympathizers and onlookers flooded the area. Some traders were rushed to the hospital for medical attention after discovering that their shops and goods have been destroyed.

To worsen the situation, a driver who stole someone's car loaded with goods while trying to escape from the police patrol van ran over a boy, injuring him badly.

Goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in the accident.

Some residents of the area report gunshots and siren sounds, others say there were explosion sounds as cartons of insecticides and perfumes were popping due to intense heat.  What a loss for these traders who have lost so much. Continue to read and see more devastating photos.....

Miracle: A Nigerian Man - Harrison Okene Who Survives 3 days underneath Atlantic Ocean Is worried Why Only Him Survived? Why His Colleagues Have to Die?

Harrison Odjegba Okene, 29, defied medics when he survived for three days in a sunken tugboat at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

Now the survivor has to face the nightmare from questions he has been asked on whether he used black magic to survive.

Speaking to Associated Press reporters Lekan Oyeknami and Sunday Alamba, the young chef said that he never again wants to find himself in a boat galley, and has since started working as a cook on firm ground.

Okene was the only survivor in a crew of 12 when the Jascon 4 capsized in May, and that still haunts him.

He stayed alive by breathing from an ever-dwindling supply of oxygen in an air pocket of the tugboat.

A video of Okene's rescue in May was posted on the Internet more than six months later and has since gone viral.

When recounting the rescue at his local parish, even the priest asked him if he had used black magic to survive.

"I was so surprised! How could a man of God be saying this?" Okene said, his voice rising in disbelief.

Okene spoke to The Associated Press at his modest two-bedroom apartment in the southern oil industry center of Warri, in his first interview with the international media since his ordeal.

He didn't go to the funerals of his colleagues because he feared their families' reactions — Nigerians being generally very religious but also superstitious.

"I couldn't go because I didn't know what the family will say, thinking 'Why is he the only one to survive,'" said Okene.

It's a question that has shaken his steadfast faith. "Every week I ask (God) 'Why only me? Why did my colleagues have to die?'"

New Insights Into Gendered Brain Wiring, Or A Perfect Case Study In Neurosexism

The latest neuroscience study of sex differences to hit the popular press has inspired some familiar headlines. The Independent, for example, proclaims that:

The hardwired difference between male and female brains could explain why men are “better at map reading” (And why women are “better at remembering a conversation”).

The study in question, published in PNAS, used a technology called diffusion tensor imaging to model the structural connectivity of the brains of nearly a thousand young people, ranging in age from eight to 22.

It reports greater connectivity within the hemispheres in males, but greater connnectivity between the hemispheres in females. These findings, the authors conclude in their scientific paper, suggest that male brains are structured to facilitate connectivity between perception and coordinated action, whereas female brains are designed to facilitate communication between analytical and intuitive processing modes.

One important possibility the authors don’t consider is that their results have more to do with brain size than brain sex. Male brains are, on average, larger than females and a large brain is not simply a smaller brain scaled up.

Larger brains create different sorts of engineering problems and so – to minimise energy demands, wiring costs, and communication times – there may physical reasons for different arrangements in differently sized brains. The results may reflect the different wiring solutions of larger versus smaller brains, rather than sex differences per se.

But also, popular references to women’s brains being designed for social skills and remembering conversations, or male brains for map reading, are utterly misleading. Continue reading after the cut....
