SOON, EARTH 'WILL GET TOO HOT FOR HUMANS'

Life on Earth will continue for up to three billion years but humans will die out far sooner, scientists have said.

Researchers say that our planet's increasing proximity to the sun will eventually result in soaring temperatures, the seas drying up and the extinction of all life.

But according to a study by the University of East Anglia, in Norwich, man-made climate change will make human life impossible long before this happens and our best chance of survival would be to relocate to another planet - with Mars being the most suitable option. Hankook Is Latest To Roll Out Airless Tire Concept

Hankook has revealed a new airless tire design called i-Flex which makes its debut this week in concept form at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. The i-Flex tire constitutes both the tire and wheel and is similar to previous concepts from Bridgestone as well as America’s own Polaris.

Apart from being puncture proof, the i-Flex tire has many other benefits. It is considerably lighter than conventional tire and wheel combinations and it can also provide a level of shock absorbency through the unique mesh structure. According to Hankook, these two attributes alone contribute to reduced fuel consumption and improved NVH levels.

However, the benefits don’t end there. The lighter weight means less unsprung mass, aiding handling, and 95 percent of the tire's materials are recyclable. The i-Flex is made from polyurethane synthetics, with the tire manufactured in conjunction with its rim as a single unit. The concept version on display in Frankfurt will measure just 155/590 R14 and be displayed on a Volkswagen up! subcompact.

Hankook hasn’t mentioned production plans but it’s only a matter of time until airless tires start to replace their pneumatic cousins.

Note, Hankook is working on even more advanced tire technology. Working with researchers from the University of Cincinnati, Hankook has developed an eMembrane tire concept that is capable of transforming its profile through internal structure changes in accordance with different driving conditions, such as in a busy city or on a race track.

For instance, when driving at high-speeds, the tire’s tread center extends to generate maximum ground friction through wider ground contact area, aiding grip. Conversely, when driving at low-speeds, the tread is designed to produce minimal road contact area and ground friction, whereby the tire's fuel efficiency is enhanced by reducing rolling resistance.

Heat Ray from London’s Skyscraper Causes More Damage

20 Fenchurch Street in central London, known as the Walkie-Talkie. Image: Jonathan Brady, PA Wire.

London's newest menace has struck again. The Walkie-Talkie, an unfinished skyscraper in the business district of the city, made the headlines yesterday after glare from the building reportedly melted sections of a Jaguar car. Now the malevolent beam of light has claimed more victims. This time it was the carpet of a barber's shop that suffered a blast from the 'heat ray'. "Even the wood [of the door] is burning and our entire product is melting," complained the owner Ali Akay. "It's not safe." Slates on the doorstep of a nearby cafe have also been "attacked". Local shops are wondering who will be zapped next. Perhaps some kind of giant sun-blocker is in order?

US TV Presenter Falls Asleep While Presenting Live Show

While audience members can be forgiven for nodding off during breakfast TV, you at least expect the presenters to stay awake. That demand proved too much for US TV presenter Tucker Carlson, who fell asleep while live on air during the Fox News morning show Fox & Friends. Credit must go to his co-hosts, Alisyn Camerota and Clayton Morris, and the show's producers for milking the moment rather than looking to cover it up with an ad break. Only Alisyn's giggles woke up her napping neighbour on the couch, before he shook his head and stretched his way back awake like it was all a dream.
