How old is too old to breastfeed? Six months? A
year? Four years? Well how about breastfeeding as an adult? If
that idea seems implausible you clearly haven’t been keeping tabs on the wacky
indulgences of China’s wealthy classes.
Firms are
offering ‘wet-nurse services’ which hire out women for adults to breastfeed
from, AFP reports. The milk is popular because of its supposed
high nutritional value. The nurses are paid £1,300 per month – and even more if
they are ‘healthy and good-looking’.
However, while those getting the milk may be happy,
the craze has attracted disgust on Chinese social media, with one poll showing
90% of people were against it. Writer and commentator Cao Baoyin said it added to China’s ‘problem of treating
women as consumer goods.’
